One Cool Cat!

The Cat in the Hat reading to students. On March 12, the kindergarten students were delighted when none other than the Cat in the Hat dropped in. The Cat (who vaguely resembles our business manager, Mike Morrow) read one of his favorite stories, Green Eggs and Ham, to the students.

Students listening to the Cat in the Hat.The Cat held the students in rapt attention while reading. Many of the students were already very familiar with the story, and were able to complete sentences for the Cat.

Veterinarian/Author Visits JCDS

Dr. Carpenter speaks to kindergarten students.JCDS kindergarten students were thrilled to have Christopher Carpenter, DVM visit and read his book Lilly's Heart. The book is about a cat named Lilly who is brought into the vet's office with a suspected heart problem. The vet's young son learns about hearts from his trusty dog, Ichabod. The story is both informative and, well, heart-warming.

Lilly's Heart book coverDr. Carpenter also taught the students about the function of the heart, and the importance of a good diet. (In the book, Lilly's heart is sick because she isn't fed good food.) The students followed up with an extensive series of questions about animals and what it's like to be a veterinarian.

Thanks to Dr. Carpenter for spending time with our students.

Preprimary Students Help
Books-A-Go Go

Book donation. The JCDS preprimary team would like to thank parents and students who participated in our book drive for Books-A-Go Go Bibliophiles of America last month. On December 12, Books-A-Go Go president Betty Metz accepted a donation of 179 books collected by our preprimary family.

Gayle Wilson, preprimary head, talked to the children about the importance of serving others and how monumental these books will be for the children receiving them.

Betty MetzBooks-A-Go Go collects used and new children's books and gives them to children from low-income families. Books-A-Go Go has given thousands and thousands of books to children whose families cannot afford to buy them the books they need. For many children, it may be the first book in their home. In the past two years the organization has given away approximately 85,000 books to needy children. For for information on this organinzation, check out their website at www.booksagogo.org.

Children receiving books.Update: The books were distributed to children who needed them. The smiles on their faces show how much the books were appreciated! The preprimary students, their parents, and the staff of JCDS are proud to have been a part of this worthy cause.end mark
