More Library Adventures!

Welcome to the JCDS Library! As we move into the cooler months, the fun continues...

First Grade Fun!
After meeting Skoob, the library-loving elf, in The Shelf Elf and The Shelf Elf Helps Out by Jackie Mims Hopkins, our 1st graders decided to attract a First grader finds elf prints.shelf elf of our own. Through great critical thinking and creative problem solving activities, they thought of ways to make an elf feel welcome in our library, find evidence of his or her presence, and determine whether our visitor is a boy or girl elf.

By making the elf a welcome mat from a tiny stamp pad, we found footprints leading to and from the elf house we made. We also found footprints on a few shelves and tables! This was our first evidence that an elf had moved in!

Elf
Even a high-speed shutter had trouble capturing the fast-moving elf, but now we have photographic evidence that he lives in our library!

While we really enjoyed finding footprints the elf left around the library, our most exciting moment so far has been the photographs Mr. Wilson caught of our elf in action! They are a bit blurry, but our elf seems to always be on the move!

Inspired by the ending of The Elves and the Shoemaker by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, we are now in the process of creating a boy outfit and a girl outfit to leave for our elf. We will see which one our guest chooses to determine whether we have a him or a her. Check back in the new year to see what he or she has chosen!

Book Exchange
Our annual book exchange was a grand success again this year! We had a line of excited students and parents waiting outside the library doors as Book Exchange in the librarythe first bell rang. Students had the opportunity to turn in any books they no longer read during the first part of the week. On Friday, they were greeted with hundreds of choices waiting in the library as they "purchased" someone else's old favorites with their exchange coupons. With the addition of some donated books to expand our choices, we were even left with three boxes of books to donate to Books A Go Go when the event ended. Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to our parent volunteers who made this event such a success!
