Parents Visit Art Class

Parents visiting art class.Recently, third grade parents were invited to attend Art with their child. The lesson was on brushwork in painting. Different arm, wrist, and hand movements were used to create different types of strokes and shapes. There was a discussion about how thick and thin the brushstrokes could be and the variety that could be created.

Later in the hour, the class moved outside to complete a large painting. The paper was placed on the covered floor and very long brushes were used to create the beautiful paintings. The expressive brushwork included wispy dry brush strokes as well as dark, thick strokes. Fun was had by all!

Art at JCDS

Dear Parents,

I am excited to be working with your child in art this year. The art curriculum offers opportunities to work in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art using a variety of materials. In addition to the regular classroom activities, your child will have a sketchbook that will stay in the art room. This sketchbook will have assignments that may correlate with the Units of Study. There will also have some assignments that correspond to books they will be reading in their regular classroom. The experiences your child will have in art this year should be enriching, fun, and exciting.

Shaw Land and boysBecause of the wonderful variety of projects, I try to display as many of them as possible. Often, work will be displayed around the campus as well as some off campus locations. When this happens, a letter will be sent home to notify you. There are also display opportunities for grade level projects in the display cases and gallery in the Kelly Fine Arts Building.

The Young Artist Forum is the school wide art exhibit that occurs in April with the Book Fair. This exhibit showcases a piece of art from each child at JCDS. Students in grades one through six were trained to serve as Junior Docents and assist the adult visitors at the show. They provided information and answered questions about the art. I believe this involvement was important for the children as it gave them a chance to reflect on the different projects we had created over the course of the year. I want you to know that I hold all of the children’s art in the classroom until the end of the school year; however, I will be sure to send all of it home after the art show in April. I appreciate your understanding about my need to retain it until the end of the school year.

It is my hope that your child has a wonderful year in art. I appreciate your continued support. If you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to call me at 641-6644, ext. 156.

Sincerely,

Shaw J. Lane
