Young Writers Workshop at JCDS

Writers Workshop RegistrationJacksonville Country Day School hosted the annual Young Writer’s Workshop on Saturday, April 18 for 4th and 5th grade students from all over the Jacksonville area.

One hundred students from twelve different schools around the county attented the workshop. Several JCDS students served as "ambassadors" and helped show our guests where to go. They were Aaron A., Kimberly H., Maggie M., Mikayla P., and Alexis M. Third graders who provided assistance included Anna G., Gabriela L., Jessica P., and Isabel S.

Dr. Dennis Smith, Jr.The Young Writer's Workshop is sponsored and funded by the JCDS Student Council.

The keynote speaker this year was Dr. Dennis M. Smith, Jr., from St. Augustine. Dr. Smith is a noted pathologist who found that has real passion was for writing. He has published many articles in medical journals throughout his career. Dr. Smith is currently working on the biography of artist Dean Mitchell.

Eight published authors presented two 45–minute writing workshops. Mrs. Wellman with studentLocal authors included Diane Wellman, Gigi Morales David, June Weltman, Karen Putzke, Laura Marlar, Gina Martinelli and Merra Lee Block.

This was the fourth annual Young Writer's Workshop, which has grown each year. This year, the attendance increased by about 50%, according to Ms. Lillian Rozanski, JCDS literacy specialist, who organized the event.endmark
